Positive Psychology, championed
by eminent psychologist Martin Seligman focusses on how people thrive and
flourish rather than on weaknesses or deficits. Seligman (2011) has proposed
five pillars of well-being: Positive
emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Achievement (the
acronym PERMA) as being essential to well-being. Exercising, eating and
sleeping well also play an essential role.
Identifying and working through
strengths, being engaged in one’s work or study, belonging and contributing to
a community, learning to appreciate one’s fortunes and qualities, taking action
to nurture relationships, pushing forward to achieve one’s goals and simply
having fun in life - these are all aspects of well-being that, if intentionally
promoted - have been shown to lead to a greater sense of life satisfaction and
well-being: happiness, if you like. My Resilience
workshops encompass instruction and action-based personal challenges in PERMA - together with standard strategies to identify
and manage occupational and personal stress.
